Tory MSP Graham Simpson is praising South Lanarkshire Council for taking up the UK Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme to lower the cost of school meals.
Fifteen out of 32 local authorities in Scotland have signed up to the scheme, which offers a 50% discount on meals, up to a maximum of £10 discount per diner from Monday to Wednesday throughout August.
The scheme was introduced by the UK Government to help the hospitality industry get back on its feet as the country emerged from the coronavirus lockdown.
Graham Simpson, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity said:
“It’s great that councils like South Lanarkshire have taken up the Eat Out to Help Out scheme to help pupils with their meal choices.
“Anything our government can do to help our families at this time is welcomed and the positive financial impact of this scheme will be widely felt throughout South Lanarkshire.
“In Scottish Parliament, when I asked the SNPs Fergus Ewing for information on the impact of the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme in Scotland, his answer fell short.
“Rather pettily, he was quite pained to praise anything from the UK Government even though we’re seeing the scheme’s impact on local businesses and on savings for families.
“I would encourage people to take up the scheme for the rest of the month of August.
