Graham Simpson, Scottish Conservative Housing Spokesman, has criticised the SNP Government after statistics revealed an increase in homelessness applications across North Lanarkshire and Scotland.
The Scottish Government publication revealed that the number of homelessness applications across Scotland went up from 18,202 to 18,406, a 2 per cent increase. In North Lanarkshire the number of homelessness applications went up from 1,008 to 1,248 - a 24 per cent increase. The statistics also highlighted that Glasgow made up 94 per cent of the number of applications that have not been offered temporary accommodation. 3,090 out 3,280 in 2017/18.
Graham Simpson said: “Throughout my time on the Local Government and Communities Committee, I have met with many people who have experienced, or are experiencing, homelessness. I have always come away with admiration at the courage and resilience of my fellow Scots – in the face of horrendous weather conditions and the feeling of exclusion from the rest of society.
“We discussed the impact that this had on their lives and how we – as a society - can try to eradicate this social evil. Housing is a human right. All Scots have a right to live in a warm and safe environment – with a roof over their head.
“It is of great concern to me and my constituents that the number of homelessness applications went up from 1,008 to 1,248 in North Lanarkshire - a 24 per cent increase. This is appalling and the Scottish Government must address this issue. Homelessness and housing supply are intrinsically linked - and the SNP have failed to meet manifesto commitments on building affordable housing. Under the SNP the number of new homes being completed has fallen by a third.
“I have called for a maximum stay of seven days for homeless people staying in bed and breakfast accommodation. I called on the Scottish government to introduce a week-long cap on "unsuitable" temporary accommodation. I am glad that the SNP Government has committed to examining this issue.
“However, we need to do more to address homelessness in Scotland. No one should be left without a roof over their head - which is why we are determined to end rough sleeping and respond to the causes of homelessness. The future direction of this issue in the coming years in Scotland, depends on the policy implementation of the SNP and future Scottish Government legislation.”
