An MSP met with staff at an East Kilbride-based paper recycling company to discuss the work they’re doing to prevent waste from going to landfill.
Conservative MSP, Graham Simpson, visited the team at Highlander Recycling to hear how they turn 1000 tonnes of paper, cardboard and wood per week into new products with the help of 16 paper mills.
Highlander Recycling, an independent company which was established twenty years ago, is the largest paper recycler in Scotland. They employ 60 people at their East Kilbride plant and operate across the country.
The firm work closely with a number of groups in the community including local school Duncanrig High, who they have recently partnered with to help educate pupils about the importance of recycling and sponsor their re-useable bottle design competition.
Mr Simpson praised Highlander for their continued efforts in facilitating the recycling of material and congratulated them for sustaining a large amount of locally-based jobs – paying the national living-wage.
Graham Simpson, MSP for Central Scotland said: “It was great to meet Highlander boss Brian Bingham, to be shown round the huge site and to hear about the success of the company.
“A lot of the paper goes to make toilet paper but it is also recycled into other grades too.
“It was very encouraging to hear about the work the firm does with school pupils too. We all need to recycle and it is best to start young.”
