MSPs visited a successful East Kilbride firm to hear about its expansion plans.
Graham Simpson joined colleague Alison Harris on a tour of Glencairn Crystal’s premises in Langlands. The company, which has been in the town since 1985, is expanding into neighbouring units next month and plans to add to its 60 members of staff. The Conservative MSPs heard how the firm is fighting a constant battle against counterfeit goods – particularly in the Far East.
Mr Simpson said: “Glencairn Crystal is undergoing rapid expansion – selling their products around the world. They have innovative ideas to sell their top-quality products in new markets. However, they are being undermined by the counterfeit imitations of their products.
“In Scotland we need more opportunities and investment for small businesses to develop and export their products around the world. The future economic health of the country depends on this vital wealth and job creation. I urge the Scottish Government to back small businesses across Scotland and to target resources at preventing the counterfeiting of Scottish products”.
Both Central Scotland MSPs tried their hand at engraving during the trip.
Mr Simpson said: “It was great fun to be able to have a shot at engraving and the glass came out okay but I would need a lot of practice to get up to speed. I will leave it to the experts. It was great to be able to see the work of this well-known local company and to hear about their expansion plans.”
