Yesterday, Graham Simpson MSP led a successful debate on the abuse of the under-22 free bus travel scheme. He was joined by Scottish Conservative colleagues in calling for a suspension of free bus travel for those found to perpetrate anti-social behaviour or the imposition of a curfew for under 22s. Transport Minister Fiona Hyslop agreed to examine how anti-social behaviour by a minority of those using the scheme can be tackled.
Graham Simpson MSP said: "Operators have reported staff being assaulted, with drivers being spat on, physical assault and racial harassment. Bus companies, their staff and passengers should not have to tolerate that. If the culprits hold a free travel card then they are abusing a privilege paid for by the taxpayer. That should not continue.
I'm pleased that the Minister took this on board and look forward to seeing what the Scottish Government do to address this serious problem".
