Graham has praised the work being done in Shotts Prison to rehabilitate offenders, after a visit to the jail.
The Central Scotland Conservative MSP met new governor Jacqueline Denton last week.
He spoke to staff and inmates at the facility, which houses Scotland’s long-term offenders.
Graham said: “Shotts houses the offenders with the longest sentences and they come from throughout Scotland.
“I was hugely impressed by the dedication of the staff and the programmes they have in place to help the men who are housed there.”
He saw inmates making joinery products such as benches and planters, doing artwork and creating their own in-houses magazine.
Former journalist Graham said: “Shotts prisoners produces two magazines – Snapshotts and the appropriately-titled Stir. They are both very high quality and show a great deal of creativity.”
He also visited the kitchen where inmates prepare meals – fish and chips being the favourite of the week.
Graham said: “It was great to see first-hand the work being done, not just by the staff but the inmates themselves.
“The pride they take in their new learned crafts and also the pleasure they take from their community work is a great credit to themselves and the staff at Shotts Prison.
“The governor has made an impressive start and has certainly stamped her mark in such a short space of time and the rewards and benefits are there for all to see.
“Hopefully the inmates can put those skills to the great good of the community and also give them something to take pride in and stop them reoffending whilst creating a good life for themselves in the process.”
