A LOCAL MSP is taking the fight to save the Woodhall and Faskine greenbelt to Holyrood.
Conservative Graham Simpson has lodged a parliamentary motion condemning the proposed development plans that will all but wipe out the local woodland around Calderbank and Carnbroe.
Developer Orchard Brae is seeking permission for 2600 homes, shops, educational and leisure facilities, restaurants, a pub, garden centre and hotel at the Europark.
Mr Simpson, a long-time campaigner against the destruction of the area, spoke passionately at the recent launch of the Save Woodhall and Faskine (SWAF) group at a packed Calderbank Community Hall, with over 150 residents voicing their concern on the development proposal.
The MSP said he would do all in his power to stop the plans to wipe out the greenbelt going ahead and has vowed to take the fight to the Scottish Parliament.
His motion for a debate in the chamber quickly received cross-party support - apart from the SNP.
Mr Simpson said: “I spoke at the recent public meeting held by SWAF and stated that I was dead against this development which would wipe out this stunning greenbelt.
“I’m not the only one who feels passionate about protecting this woodland for future generations to enjoy.
“Only last week in the Advertiser the local medical practice penned an open letter condemning the move to build on the local greenbelt.
“The doctors signed the letter, pointing out that the NHS is facing a health epidemic of obesity, type 2 diabetes and mental health issues. They stated that the first line management of all three is exercise, with the most benefit being seen in a natural environment.
“I totally agree, that is why my motion condemned these plans and I congratulated SWAF on their opposition to this development.
“The motion has received cross-party support apart from the SNP, which is disappointing. I know there are SNP members who are against the development but it would good to have MSPs on board too.
“Last Saturday SWAF arranged for a group picture at the Rainbow Gates in Calderbank to promote their campaign. Myself, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard and local MP Hugh Gaffney were there to offer our support and listen to the people who will be most affected by this proposal. Sadly, no one from the SNP bothered to turn up to offer their support.
“There will now be a debate at Holyrood in which all parties, including the SNP, will have to make their views known.”
I am also running a survey seeking your views on this development. Please take a moment to fill in it in using this LINK.
Here is the motion in full.
That the Parliament notes the efforts of campaigners fighting to save greenbelt land at Woodhall and Faskine estates in North Lanarkshire from development; considers that greenbelt and greenspaces play an important role in aiding physical and mental health; notes the view that such land should not be given up for development, and commends the Save Woodhall and Faskine group on its efforts to save what it believes is an important area for generations to come.
