An MSP helped to bring the headlines from the East Kilbride News to people with a visual impairment by doing a shift at the town’s talking newspaper.
Graham Simpson visited the charity, based at East Kilbride Arts Centre, for a recording session and read some stories out himself.
The Central Scotland MSP, who lives in Stewartfield, said: “I was invited along to discuss the work they do. The service is run entirely by volunteers who record 50 weeks of the year.
“I was asked to do my bit and I had great fun reading out a few of the stories from the EK News, making sure of course that they didn’t feature me.”
The talking newspaper started in East Kilbride in 1980. Recordings are out onto USB sticks and posted to people every week. They listen to the programme on special speakers supplied by the group.
The group’s Jane Brittin said: “We really enjoyed Graham's visit - it's very encouraging when someone takes an interest in our work and in the needs of our listeners. We couldn't issue our weekly recordings without the dedicated work of our many volunteers. EKTN is always happy to welcome new listeners and anyone interested in receiving our service should contact Lesley Noble on 01355 227081 or [email protected]. “
