Conservative MSP welcomes South Lanarkshire Council dropping plans to build a nursery at the Westwoodhill Recreation Area.
A damning report from SNP-run South Lanarkshire Council has revealed a nursery funding shortfall of £13million and that the SNP government policies would "produce a lower quality nursery provision" than the council would want.
Graham Simpson MSP said “The only positive good news to come out of this report is that it appears that the Council will have to drop its plans to build a new nursery on greenspace at Westwoodhill in East Kilbride.
“The news that South Lanarkshire Council was considering a proposal to build a nursery on land at the Westwoodhill Recreation Area was setting a dangerous precedent. The vision of building new towns like East Kilbride was to get people out from the overcrowded and polluted inner cities in the post-war era. The creation of green space was a vital part of these new residential areas and we know from numerous research studies that access to local, quality green spaces improves our physical and mental health and wellbeing.
“Last night we formed a Friends of Westwoodhill Recreation Area group, which will work with the council to improve this area for everyone and keep it as part of the green lungs of East Kilbride”.
