Graham Simpson has called on council chiefs to find a solution to the parking problem at Hairmyres train station.
Graham and East Kilbride West councillor Ian Harrow met local residents last Thursday to seek their views on the on-going issue.
They heard the locals concern that the parking issue on surrounding residential streets near the station was an accident waiting to happen.
Nearly 50 residents turned up to vent their frustration at the lack of action in finding a solution.
Locals plagued by commuters parking in streets told of dangerous parking on street corners and of driveways being blocked.
Graham said: “Ian and I contacted the residents to say we would have a consultation on the on-going issues with parking at Hairmyres Hospital, nearby streets and the train station.
“The sheer numbers that turned out, made it clear that we have to find a solution once and for all.
“The residents voiced their continued frustration as they feel that the problem seems to be spiralling out of control as more and more streets surrounding the station are being turned into all day and even by some accounts all weekend parking bays by selfish drivers.
“We heard that the police have been called on numerous occasions to cars being parked on bends and for the resident to be informed that there is nothing that the police could do.
“Residents want action from the council after years of dithering. We got some great ideas, such as yellow lines, parking permits and identified some possible alternative car park sites. Ian and myself will be taking forward those proposals as a matter of urgency.
“The residents were at pains to point out that they have sympathy for the train commuters and the need to find a solution that is suitable to both parties."
Cllr Harrow told the meeting that council chiefs are due to meet health bosses to try to hammer out a deal to expand parking at Hairmyres Hospital.
He said: "A solution has to be found. East Kilbride is getting bigger and the demand for parking at both our stations is only going to grow."
